Minhelet Ha’am – Transitional Period Cover, Mixed Franking: Palestine Mandate Stamp and JNF Label Overprinted “Doar”, Haifa – 10 May 1948 - Cover from the transitional postal period between the end of the British Mandate and the establishment of the State of Israel, mailed within Haifa on 10 May 1948. The cover bears mixed postage typical of the period: • Palestine Mandate 20 mil stamp – Tower of David design. • JNF label 5 mil overprinted “Doar” (postage), authorized for postal use during the Minhelet Ha’am administration. Both adhesives are cancelled by a Minhelet Ha’am Haifa postmark, alongside an additional Mandate-era HAIFA postmark set to 10 MAY 1948, only days before the end of British rule and the declaration of the State of Israel. Addressed locally in Haifa to: H. Sh. Bas P.O.B. 136 Haifa. The combination of a Mandate stamp together with a JNF label overprinted “Doar” reflects one of the distinctive features of the transitional postal system, when the Jewish Provisional Government permitted the temporary use of such labels as postage until the issuance of the Doar Ivri stamps. Good overall condition for the period, with normal signs of handling and age. An interesting postal history item from May 1948, illustrating the dramatic transition in the postal system during the final days of the Mandate.
