Emergency Postal Service – Rishon LeZion 1948 – RLZ Emergency Mail Label Designed by Eva Samuel, Corner Margin Example on Philatelic Exhibition Page - Emergency mail label issued in Rishon LeZion in 1948, shown here as a corner margin example with full selvage, mounted on a decorative Israel Postal Issues exhibition page. The label depicts an armed courier beside an armored vehicle and bears the inscription “By Armoured Car – LeZion” together with the inscription Eretz Israel in Hebrew. The stamp was designed by the artist Eva Samuel, one of the artists active in Eretz Israel during the period surrounding the establishment of the State of Israel. The dramatic design reflects the dangerous transportation conditions of the time, when mail was carried in armored convoys between settlements. The Rishon LeZion emergency postal service was established during the hostilities of the War of Independence, when the route to Tel Aviv could be travelled only by armored vehicles with military escorts. The local council initiated a daily emergency delivery service to Tel Aviv beginning April 5th, 1948, later extended in the opposite direction as well. The service operated using armored cars and special messengers in Tel Aviv and continued until May 6th, 1948, when the postal system operated by the Minhelet Ha'am replaced the local service. The present example is well preserved and displayed with original margins (corner margin example). Items of this type, particularly corner examples in exhibition format, are sought after by collectors of the 1948 transitional postal issues. Condition: well preserved.
