Minhelet Ha’am – Nahariya Emergency Sea Mail – Cover from Haifa to Besieged Nahariya with 10 Mil Local Delivery Tax Label – April 1948 - Original cover sent from Haifa to Nahariya during the siege of the Western Galilee in the final months of the British Mandate, carried by the Emergency Sea Mail service established after the road between Haifa and Nahariya was blocked in March 1948. Franked with a 10 mil Mandate Palestine stamp, cancelled Haifa – 20 APR 1948. Upon arrival in Nahariya by sea, the cover was charged a local delivery fee of 10 mil, paid using a Nahariya Local Council revenue label affixed to the envelope and cancelled locally. Such revenue labels were used during the siege to indicate payment of the delivery fee for incoming mail carried by the emergency maritime postal service. Covers documenting this improvised postal system, when Nahariya was completely isolated and communication with Haifa relied on motor launches, represent important material from the postal history of the 1948 war period. Condition good for a wartime cover, with central fold and minor age toning as expected for postal material from this period. Attached is a certificate of authenticity from Y. Taschor.
