Nahariya Siege – Emergency Post Stamps of the Nahariya Local Council – Set of Three Values with Minhelet Ha’am Cancellation – 1948 - A group of Nahariya Local Council Emergency Post stamps, issued during the siege of Nahariya and the Western Galilee in the 1948 War of Independence. After the road to Haifa was blocked, Nahariya became isolated from the rest of the country. The Nahariya Local Council assumed responsibility for local postal services and issued a special set of stamps inscribed “Emergency Post.” These stamps were issued on April 25, 1948 and remained in use until May 12, 1948, when the blockade was broken and normal land communication resumed. The set includes three denominations: 10 mils – postcard rate 20 mils – letter rate 50 mils – registered mail or parcels The stamps feature a simple design with a Star of David and trilingual inscriptions (Hebrew, English, and Arabic), representing one of the unique local postal initiatives during the transitional period between the end of the British Mandate and the establishment of the State of Israel. The examples shown bear Minhelet Ha’am cancellations, typical of the period. Highly collectible material within the field of Palestine and early Israeli postal history.
