Nahariya Siege – Emergency Sea Mail Cover – Mandate Stamps with Nahariya 20 Mil Emergency Post Label – “The Isolated Western Galilee” Slogan – May 9, 1948 - Original cover from the siege of Nahariya and the Western Galilee during the 1948 War of Independence. After the road to Haifa was blocked, Nahariya became isolated and postal communication was maintained by an Emergency Sea Mail service using motor launches between Nahariya and Haifa. The cover is franked with a pair of 5 mil Mandate Palestine stamps, cancelled with a Minhelet Ha’am Nahariya postmark. Also affixed is a Nahariya Emergency Post label valued at 20 mils, paying the fee for maritime transport. The cover bears the well known siege slogan marking: “The Isolated Western Galilee.” It also carries the BY SEA service marking used for mail transported by boat. Postmark date: May 9, 1948, only days before the end of the British Mandate and the declaration of the State of Israel. The combination of Mandate stamps, a Nahariya emergency label, Minhelet Ha’am cancellation, the BY SEA marking, and the “Isolated Western Galilee” slogan illustrates the improvised postal arrangements used during the siege of the Western Galilee.
