Emergency Mail – Besieged Safed – Cover with Local “Doar Tsefat” 10 Mils Stamp – 7 May 1948 - Original cover from the siege of Safed during the 1948 War of Independence, mailed on May 7, 1948 from Safed to Tel Aviv, bearing a locally produced “Doar Tsefat” 10 mils emergency stamp. Following the collapse of Mandate postal services and the shortage of stamps, a temporary Jewish postal service operated in Safed beginning May 4, 1948. Approximately 2,200 local stamps were printed and used until Doar Ivri stamps reached the town later in May. The stamp is tied by a red Safed cancellation dated 7 MAY 1948 on a commercial envelope of J. Bleiman – Chemist, Safad. The cover was originally addressed to the Anglo-Palestine Bank in Haifa, but the address was crossed out and replaced with a Tel Aviv address, reflecting wartime disruptions to communications and mail routes. “Doar Tsefat” stamps were printed on the inside of security envelopes with blue wavy lines, ungummed, and affixed by postal clerks at the time of mailing. Authentically used covers from the siege period emergency mail service of Safed are highly desirable items of early Israeli postal history. Condition: Good.
