Registered Cover with Mixed Franking – Transitional Period – Tel Aviv, 16 May 1948 - Registered cover mailed in Tel Aviv on 16 May 1948, the first full working day of the Israeli postal service after the declaration of independence. The cover clearly reflects the transition between three postal administrations: the British Mandate, the Minhelet Ha’am provisional administration, and the newly established Israeli postal service. The envelope bears mixed franking consisting of: Two Keren Kayemet LeIsrael – Herzl stamps (5 and 10 mils). Two Minhelet Ha’am stamps overprinted “Doar”. One Keren Kayemet LeIsrael – Bialik stamp (2 mils). Total franking: 25 mils, corresponding to the registered mail rate at the time. Minhelet Ha’am stamps remained valid until 22 May 1948, allowing such transitional mixed frankings. All stamps are cancelled with a British Mandate “REGISTERED TEL AVIV” canceller, still in use during the first days of Israeli postal operations. An original TEL AVIV 1 registration label – No. 4078 is affixed on the front, with additional transit markings on the reverse. Blue crayon markings typical of registered mail handling are present.
