WAR OF INDEPENDENCE – Israeli P.O.W. mail from Umm al Jimal camp, Jordan (Arab Legion), via the Red Cross - Envelope sent by Israeli prisoner of war Dov Shalit from an Arab Legion prisoner of war camp in Jordan, most likely Umm al Jimal, to his family in Haifa through the International Red Cross. The address was written by the prisoner in his own hand: “Dov Shalit – P.O.W. Camp – Arab Legion – c/o Red Cross” Addressed to: Mrs. Ada Shalit c/o Palestine Electric Corporation P.O.B. 10 Haifa The item documents the route of prisoner of war correspondence during the 1948 War of Independence. The envelope was sent from the Arab Legion POW camp in Jordan, passed Jordanian censorship, was forwarded through the Red Cross office in Amman, transferred via the Israeli Liaison with the Red Cross, passed Israeli military censorship, and was eventually delivered in Haifa.
