War of Independence – Israeli POW Mail from a Syrian POW Camp via the International Red Cross to Neve Yam, 1949 - Rare prisoner of war mail cover sent by Israeli soldier and POW Eliyahu Imdorf from a Syrian POW camp to his family in Kibbutz Neve Yam (Post: Atlit). The envelope was transmitted through the International Red Cross system and reached Israel after a complex route that took about a month. The cover bears the manuscript endorsement “Through the Red Cross” and additional inspection notes. The route of transmission is documented by several postal and censorship markings: • Syrian military censor marking in Arabic • International Red Cross cachet – Amman, 5 March 1949 • Israeli liaison with the Red Cross cachet (Hebrew) • Israeli military post office cancellation – 1 April 1949 • Additional routing and inspection markings Historical background: After the capture of Kibbutz Mishmar Hayarden on 10 June 1948, several of its defenders were taken prisoner by Syrian forces and held in POW camps in Syria. Communication with their families was possible only through the Red Cross system. The present cover documents this rare wartime postal route between Syria and Israel. Condition: Good.
