War of Independence – Mail to a Palestinian Prisoner of War Held in Israel, Hebron 10 Dec 1948, via the Red Cross - Rare War of Independence cover sent from Hebron on 10 December 1948 to a Palestinian prisoner of war held in Israel, transmitted through the Red Cross. The letter originated in Hebron and was first routed to the Red Cross office in Ramallah. From there it was handed to the Israeli authorities, censored, and forwarded to Camp No. 1 holding POWs. The sender is Mahmoud Hejazie of the Badran coffee shop in Hebron, who addressed the letter to Abdullah Abdul Haddie Hejazie. The franking consists of a 10 mil Egyptian stamp overprinted “Palestine”, issued by the Egyptian army during the invasion period. The stamp is cancelled with a Hebron postmark. Postal markings include: • Red Cross handstamp • Arabic cachet reading “Office of Prisoners of War – Al-Quds (Jerusalem)” • Israeli censorship markings including circular “Censored / נבדק” handstamp with examiner number • Additional transit and control markings related to the POW mail system An important War of Independence postal item documenting the Red Cross transmission system used for correspondence with prisoners of war between Jordanian-controlled territory and Israel.
