Returned cover from Jerusalem to Germany 1934, Jaffa transit and Berlin arrival, German postal markings “Unbekannt” and “Empfänger nicht ermittelt” - British Mandate period postal cover sent from Jerusalem to Germany in 1934 and returned to the sender after the addressee could not be located. On the front is a 15 Mils Palestine stamp depicting the Dome of the Rock, tied by a Jerusalem 20 JA 34 cancellation. The letter was routed via Jaffa 20 JA 34, the principal export post office for overseas mail from Palestine during the Mandate period. On the reverse appears a German arrival postmark Berlin W – 4 Feb 1934. After an unsuccessful delivery attempt, the cover received the official postal label “Unbekannt / inconnu” (addressee unknown) and the handstamp “Empfänger nicht ermittelt”, indicating that the addressee could not be identified. Additional handwritten postal notes document an attempt by the German postal authorities to verify the address and possibly redirect the letter, including a reference to Zürich 4, but the addressee could still not be located. The cover was therefore returned to the sender. An interesting postal item documenting the route of mail from Palestine to Germany in the 1930s, showing transit and arrival postmarks together with German postal investigation and return markings.
