Holocaust – Document Archive, Neumann and Halperin Families, Europe–Palestine, 1930s–1940s - A large and diverse group comprising dozens of original documents: handwritten letters, postal postcards, telegrams and official forms, all related to the Neumann and Halperin families. Part of the family resided in Eretz Israel (Gedera, via Rehovot), while relatives remained in Eastern Europe (Romania, Hungary, the Maramureș/Sighet region). Note: This lot has not been thoroughly researched on a full genealogical or historical level. However, a preliminary review of the names, addresses and contents suggests a coherent family archive documenting continuous communication between relatives in Eretz Israel and Europe before and during World War II. In addition, a Yad Vashem Page of Testimony relating to members of the Neumann family corresponds in part to names appearing in the present documents. Red Cross Telegrams and Wartime Communication The lot includes six official Red Cross telegrams alongside additional communication forms, including: Palestine Posts, Telegraphs & Telephones telegrams British Red Cross – Postal Message / Reply Coupon forms Short, concise telegram messages typical of restricted wartime communication Among the items is a telegram referring to relocation to a ghetto, reflecting the circumstances of family members at that time. Content and Correspondence The letters are written in several languages (German, Yiddish, Hebrew and occasionally Hungarian), and include: Routine updates on the condition of family members References to numerous relatives (Neumann, Halperin and others) Mentions of increasing communication difficulties and changing conditions in Europe Requests for replies and confirmations of receipt Most postcards retain their original postage and postal cancellations, and in some cases also censorship marks and transit handstamps, allowing for tracing of postal routes and wartime delays. Some documents were written on simple or improvised paper, occasionally showing signs of reuse. Connection to Eretz Israel Many items are addressed to: Neumann Natan, Gedera, via Rehovot, Palestina reflecting a direct connection between the family in Eretz Israel and their relatives in Europe. Significance This is a substantial family archive comprising a wide range of document types from a significant historical period, combining personal correspondence with official material, including six Red Cross telegrams.
