Yaure Style African Mask with Bird Crest, Côte d’Ivoire - Carved wooden face mask in the style of the Yaure people of Côte d’Ivoire. The elongated oval face is decorated with white and reddish pigment, contrasting dark features, pierced slit-shaped eyes and geometric scarification marks on the cheeks. Surmounted by a stylized bird, a motif associated with spiritual protection and communication with the supernatural world. Probably a decorative or tourist-market interpretation of a traditional Yaure mask, second half of the 20th century.
