The painting was acquired, together with a larger group of works, directly from the artist by Eshel Gallery, which later entrusted these paintings to us at the most favorable terms possible. There is little doubt that Eshel Gallery chose a starting price at which they themselves would incur a loss. As the gallery owner's wife famously remarked, ”Paintings belong in your office, not covering the walls of your home.” This iconic and powerful composition presents the motif most closely associated with Kadishman—the sheep—rendered here in a vivid, direct, and commanding interpretation. The composition focuses on the sheep's head, built through thick, tactile brushstrokes that create a richly textured surface.
