Avraham Binder - Jerusalem – View Toward the Old City. 90x80 An oil on canvas painting depicting the iconic skyline of Old Jerusalem, as it appears to the observer from afar – a city of stone, memory and faith, hovering almost between reality and dream. The artist chooses not to depict Jerusalem in a documentary and precise manner, but rather through an expressive and free pictorial language, which gives the city an emotional and poetic character. The walls of the Old City spread across the composition, and behind them are crowded domes, minarets and ancient buildings built on top of each other into a dense and lively architectural fabric. Within the urban fabric, one can see the familiar domes of Jerusalem, hinting at the layers of holiness and history that the city has carried with it for thousands of years. In the lower part of the work appears the landscape extending towards the walls – paths, trees, patches of vegetation and tiny human figures, treated with free and spontaneous brushstrokes. The transition between the earthly landscape and the city seen above creates a sense of gradual ascent, almost an inner journey, from the everyday to the sublime. The color palette is both restrained and rich. Shades of gray, olive-green, deep blue, and brown combine with touches of white and stone-gold, reminiscent of the unique Jerusalem light and the local stone that changes throughout the day. The dark, dramatic sky hovering over the city gives the composition emotional depth and a sense of mystery, as if Jerusalem exists between past and present, between reality and memory. There is an almost dreamlike quality to the work. The buildings are not defined in a rigid architectural manner, but rather merge into one another in a network of color spots and sensitive lines. It is precisely through the blurring and pictorial decomposition that the artist succeeds in capturing the essence of Jerusalem – a city that is not just a geographical place, but a symbol of longing, faith, identity, and collective memory. The classic gilded frame complements the dignified nature of the work and gives it an impressive and festive presence.
