Oren Markovitz - Avidanism – A Tribute to David Avidan, 2016. 60x50 The work before us is a powerful and uncompromising tribute to one of the most original and influential figures in Israeli culture – David Avidan (1934–1995), the poet, writer and multidisciplinary creator who was ahead of his time in the fields of poetry, media and art. At the center of the work is a portrait of Avidan, presented in a direct, almost iconic manner. Above the figure is the word AVIDANISM – a concept that echoes Avidan’s unique conceptual world and his lasting influence on Israeli culture. The portrait does not seek to merely document the man’s face, but to immortalize an idea, attitude and extraordinary personality that left a deep mark on generations of creators and readers. Artist Oren Markowitz, a graffiti artist in his youth, creates a fascinating visual tension between the monochromatic face, painted in black and white, and the intense fields of color that surround it. The thick brushstrokes, the prominent layers of color, and the strong contrasts between orange, blue, green, and red give the work an extraordinary expressive energy and an impressive presence in space. The painting combines portraiture, contemporary pop art, and expressionism, creating a dialogue between cultural memory and modern visual language.
