All the works we received were exhibited there and a large part of them were sold in France, where Ryback ended his life at a very young age. This is a self-portrait of Ryback on Cannes. Issachar Ber Ryback was one of the most prominent Jewish artists of the early 20th century, who worked between Eastern Europe and the centers of modern European art. His work combines a folk Jewish world, poetic imagination and a personal visual language, characterized by a free line of drawings, refined humor and a sense of legend. Ryback uses minimalist lines and dark spots of color to build a figure full of character and movement. The long rod draws the eye upward and creates a sense of anticipation and adventure, while the empty space around the figure emphasizes the poetic solitude and dreamlike atmosphere of the work. Like many of his works on paper, here too the artist’s ability to tell a complete story through limited means is evident. The young figure becomes a symbol of search, curiosity, and hope – motifs that often recur in the work of Jewish artists of the period, who lived between memory, wandering, and dreaming.
