Discovery: Letter from Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik Regarding the Ponovezher Rabbi’s Offer to Appoint Him Mashgiach of Ponovezh; Lucerne, 1961

Long, interesting letter handwritten by Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik of Switzerland, son of Rabbi Yisrael Gershon, who was Rabbi Chaim Soloveichik’s oldest son.

As revealed in the letter, in 1961 the Ponovezher Rabbi offered Rabbi Moshe the position of mashgiach in the Ponovezh Yeshiva. In this letter, Rabbi Moshe deliberates whether or not to accept the offer, explaining his hesitations as to whether the position suited him. He also requests that the addressee confer with Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shteinman, “since he knows me.”

Later in the letter, Rabbi Moshe discusses whether or not purchasing insurance shows a lack of faith.

Rabbi Moshe Soloveichik (1915-1995) was a leading Torah figure in the last generation. He was the grandson of Rabbi Chaim HaLevi Soloveichik and a disciple of both the Imrei Moshe and Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz. He fled to Switzerland along with Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shteinman in order to evade the draft. He spent his entire life spreading Torah and yirah in Switzerland and was admired by all of the Torah leaders.
