Long letter by
Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke
of Selish 1864
*

Long letter of chidushei Torah spanning on two whole pages written in the holy hands of the holy Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Ab”d of Selish author of the "Tzror Hachaim ''.

At the end of the letter he refers to an issue that caused a great turmoil throughout Hungarian Jewry at the time, the opening of the Rabbinical Seminary in Budapest, in the letter he beseeches for help in attempt to prevent its opening. “And I request …. please stand against the people of Fest who want to uproot the Torah and for that you would be greatly rewarded from heaven'.

1864 is the year in which the well-known rabbinical delegation took place to stand before Emperor Franz Joseph not to give a hand to the plans of the Reformers to undermine traditional Torah Jewry.

Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Ab”d of Selish (1805-1875) from the greatest holy tzaddikim of Hungary, a gaon and mekubal which thousands flocked to his door for blessings and salvation. The great chassidic Amorim and Tzaddikim admired him immensely, the Chidushei Harim and Rabbi Chaim of Tzanz would send to him ill patients for blessings for health.

Sent to the esteemed Rabbi Mordechai Lowe from Budapest, on the margins of the letter he reports to him words of nachas regarding his son who learns at his Yeshiva in Selish.

Selish 1864. Page size: 20*16 cm written on both sides of the page, all written by his holy hand with his signature. Condition: small hole with damage, otherwise in good condition.

The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad said on his tremendous genius in learning: he is as sharp as the author of the Tumim (Rabbi Yehonoson Aibeshitz) his rulings are as of the Noda Beyehuda, and he studies torah with emes like the author of the Haflah.

He would offer blessings with the power of his Torah; he would say this chidush in divrei torah should be of merit for a certain ill patient and in this zechus he should have Refuah Shleimah.
