Discovery! The Lost Chiddushim of the Chasam Sofer on Maseches Gittin!!! transcribed by his student. Pressburg, 1807 * It is not every day that new chiddushim of the Chasam Sofer, never before published, come to light. Presented here is a fascinating and exciting discovery - the long-lost chiddushim of the Chasam Sofer on Maseches Gittin, which he delivered before the Yeshiva upon his arrival to serve in the distinguished Rabbanus of Pressburg in 1807. It is known that the first masechta taught by the Chasam Sofer after assuming his position in Pressburg in 1807 was Gittin. See Shu”t Chasam Sofer Yoreh De’ah siman 147, in a teshuva dated 7 Adar II 1807 , where he writes: “At present we are engaged in Maseches Gittin.” However, the chiddushim of the Chasam Sofer on Gittin, which we know and have in print today, are derived from two other editions: the first consists of notes composed before his arrival in Pressburg (1794–1796), and the second originates from his later years (1835–1836). The chiddushim he delivered right after arriving in Pressburg in 1807 were never published, and the manuscript was thought to be lost. Now, by Divine Providence, we are privileged to present for the first time many sections from the Chasam Sofer's shiurim on Gittin from the year 1807, whose light we had not merited until now. Click From the above listing, it appears that in two places in the teshuvos of the Chasam Sofer (Orach Chaim siman 5 and Yoreh De’ah siman 210) where he references his chiddushim, he is actually referring to these very writings and not to any of the other editions! The manuscript is a large volume of 180 pages containing chiddushim on Masechtos Gittin, Avodah Zarah, Shabbos, Kiddushin, Yevamos, Kesubos, Bava Metzia, and Chullin, as well as a few entries of 'milli d’drosh' (homiletic explanations), all written by one of his talmidim who clearly sat before the Chasam Sofer and transcribed his words verbatim. The newly discovered chiddushim on Maseches Gittin span approximately 25 leaves in this manuscript. In addition to the unknown chiddushim on Maseches Gittin, the volume includes chiddushim on Maseches Avodah Zarah that were likewise never printed. The manuscript was thoroughly examined by several Torah scholars, as by the author of Meva’er HaSofer, who confirmed the above. At the beginning of the second chapter of Avodah Zarah there is a short poem: “He who stands by the pauper’s side / shall stand by my side. / Knowledge and understanding He shall grant me / in the chiddushim of the second chapter.” The Chasam Sofer often composed such rhymes at the beginning and end of his chiddushim. They were collected in the sefer Shiras Moshe, which contains his poems on masechtos. However, this poem is not found there. In two places, the manuscript mentions the year 1811, and in one place, the year 1812. One section says: “Chiddushim of our master, the holy Gaon, Av Beis Din of the holy kehillah of Pressburg, may it be established and built, delivered here publicly on Shabbos 15 Shevat 1811, on the sugya of a tree that bore fruit on Rosh Hashanah, leaf 15b.” Another note reads: “What Hashem has granted me… here in the holy community of Pressburg, Sunday, 1811, in the name of the Gaon and Av Beis Din of Pressburg, the esteemed Rabbi Moshe Sofer of Frankfurt.” And on leaf 34b: “I have concluded here in Pressburg, eve of 7 Adar, 1812.” Chiddushim of Rabbi Tebele Scheuer, Av Beis Din of Mainz, Rebbi of the Chasam Sofer The opening ten leaves of the manuscript contain chiddushim attributed to the great Gaon Rabbi David Tebele Scheuer, one of the teachers of the Chasam Sofer. The heading states: “In the name of the great Gaon, prince among men, Rabbi David Tebele Scheuer of blessed memory.” The Chasam Sofer had his rebbi’s writings before him and he cites them in his own chiddushim (see for example Chiddushei Sugyos, Jerusalem 1969, siman 10: “I saw in the writings of my master and teacher, the Gaon Rabbi Tebele Scheuer, zt”l”). Chiddushim of Rabbi Zerach Eidlitz of Prague Leaves 75b–79a contain “reasonings on Maseches Avodah Zarah in the name of the great Rabbi Zerach Eidlitz zt”l.” Signatures and Notes: Several places feature the ownership inscription: “Zalman U.D.” [=Unsdorf/Unsdorff]. At the end of a few sections there is handwriting written later: “Reviewed, Moshe Sofer.” At the beginning of the manuscript there is a note “the humble one Yisroel.” On the front flyleaf is a list of sefarim loaned out; one sefer is noted as loaned to “the Rav Av Beis Din of the kehillah of Verboi” [a number of the Chasam Sofer’s talmidim also learned under the Gaon, author of Sha’arei Torah, Rav of Verboi].
