Founding of a Shul in Nusach Sefard Letter from Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum of Sighet The Atzei Chaim,  1925 * Autographed letter of the Admor Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum of Sighet, author of ‘Atzei Chaim’, regarding the establishment of a shul following Nusach Sefard in the city of Shamkot. The letter was written by his attendant, with the final line written personally by the Rebbe in his handwriting and with his signature: “Your friend and cousin who seeks your welfare, may Hashem protect you. With much love, Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum.” The letter is addressed to ”my distinguished cousin, my beloved friend, the gaon and tzaddik shlit”a.” It appears this cousin was Rabbi Moshe Dovid Teitelbaum, Av Beis Din of Laposh, son of the Rebbe of Volovo who was the son-in-law of the Yitav Lev. The topic addressed in the letter revolves around a sensitive communal issue: At the beginning of the Jewish resettlement in Shamkot, a minyan according to Nusach Ashkenaz was established. After a while, as the chassidim increased in number in the city, they established a minyan according to Nusach Sefard. Now, there was someone who wished to establish an additional minyan in Nusach Sefard in his home, and there was concern that the previous Nusach Sefard minyan might be abolished because of this. The details of the query and the lengthy halachic teshuva of the Atzei Chaim are printed in 'Shu”t Atzei Chaim'  see here . In this particular letter, the Rebbe reiterates and emphasizes what he wrote at the end of the teshuva – that he later heard additional details regarding the matter, and therefore his teshuva is to be considered a theoretical halachic discussion and not practical halacha. Rabbi Chaim Tzvi Teitelbaum of Sighet (1880-1926), author of 'Atzei Chaim, ' was a prominent Rebbe in Hungary and a member of an illustrious family with generations of Rebbes and Rabbis. His father was the Kedushas Yom Tov, who was the son of the Yitav Lev, who was the son-in-law of Admor Harav Shalom Eliezer Halberstam of Ratzfert, who was in turn the son of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz. His brother was the Divrei Yoel of Satmar. Rabbi Chaim Tzvi became a Rebbe in Sighet at the young age of 24 and led his large congregation of thousands of Chassidim with great wisdom. Throughout his life, he faced physical illness and frailty but drew on his profound spiritual strength to combat the challenges of modernism and maintain spiritual sanctity in Hungary. He passed away from a sudden blood clot at the age of 46. His son is the Beirach Moshe of Satmar, and his son-in-law was the Admor of Sanz-Klausenburg.
