Likutei Amarim-Tanya First Edition of Tanya Vol. 3 Zolkiew, 1799 Published during the author’s lifetime! * “Tanya, which is Sefer Likutei Amarim… to which we added additional material …from the Gaon… the author may he be guarded and protected, which is to explain the essence and nature of teshuvah (repentance). This is the third volume [Iggeres HaTeshuvah] which was not [included] in the earlier editions printed in Slavita…” This edition of Sefer HaTanya by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi was printed during his lifetime, with the highly significant addition of Iggeres HaTeshuvah in its first version, and is referred to here as Likutei Amarim, Part III. In this edition, the famous name “Tanya” was bequeathed to this groundbreaking Torah work and it has been known by this name ever since. The previous edition was entitled 'Likutei Amarim'. With new approbations for the publication by Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Hirsch Meiselish, Av Beis Din of Zhovkva, and Rabbi Yitzchak HaLevi of Lvov, Av Beis of Cracow. In the latter’s endorsement, he highly commends the sefer and its author, adding that, “Due to his great humility, the author’s name is unknown, yet from his words I glean that he is a holy man of G-d.” Zolkiew, 1799.
