Manuscript   Prayers for Rosh Hashanah Night Rome, 1820 * Beautiful manuscript of 112 pages – a special order of tefillos prepared for those remaining awake on the first and second nights of Rosh Hashanah. This seder tefillah was arranged by the gaon Rabbi Avraham Anav, one of the prominent Rabbanim of Rome at the end of the 18th century. He was appointed in 1772 by Rabbi Yom Tov Algazi of Jerusalem (the Maharit) to lead the community together with two other elders. This sefer of tefillos exists only in a handful of manuscripts and was never printed! At the beginning of the manuscript is a hand-illustrated title page, featuring an impressive architectural border with ornamentation. At its top is a unique illustration of a hand holding a shofar, surrounded by the verse: “And Hashem Elokim shall sound the shofar.” The title page is inscribed with the place and date of writing: Rome, 1820. The manuscript is bound in an attractive original leather binding with gilt embossing, including a gilt imprint of the owner: S. M. Gilt edges. Rome, 1820. Page Count: 112 written pages + blank leaves. Size: 20.5 cm. Paper: Thick, high-quality Italian paper. Condition: Good. Stains, minor rubbing and color fading to the binding. Housed in a matching case and cover, with parchment labels written in a sofer’s script affixed to the spine listing details of the manuscript.
