Maseches Sanhedrin and Shavuos of Chazon Ish With His Handwritten Glosses * Masechtos Sanhedrin and Shavuos, containing lengthy chiddushim written by the Chazon Ish himself during his in-depth study. On the final leaf of Maseches Shavuos there are lengthy chiddushim on nearly half a page. In addition, further extensive chiddushim are inscribed in the margins, alongside several shorter glosses. In 1920, the Chazon Ish settled in Vilna. Each morning he would walk to the home of his brother-in-law, the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Greineman, who had designated a room in his home for the Chazon Ish’s use. The room was sparsely furnished with a chair, table, bed, and several classic sefarim. During this period, the Chazon Ish spent most of his day secluded in this room, immersed in Torah study. This large volume of Shas was the primary focus of his learning and study at that time. Vilna, 1883. Masechtos Sanhedrin and Shavuos are bound together. Printed by the Romm Widow and Brothers. Some glosses were written by one of his students who studied with him, including notes stating, “It appears to our teacher, may he live and be well” and “It appears to our master, may he be granted life.” Condition: Missing title pages to Maseches Sanhedrin. The first leaf of Sanhedrin contains many adhesive repairs. Aside from that, there are water stains, mostly light ones. Most of the chiddushim and glosses were later published in the sefarim of the Chazon Ish, sometimes with slight variations. Regarding the sanctity of sefarim, the Chazon Ish stated that a sefer that has already been studied from possesses greater holiness (Maaseh Ish, vol. 3, p. 94). How much more then can one imagine the holiness of a Gemara in which the Chazon Ish himself toiled and learned!!! The Chazon Ish once said (translated from the original Yiddish): ”Every Jew is obligated to know the entire Shas, and he who does not will be punished.” (Maaseh Ish, vol. 2, p. 63)
