Rare Leaf of chiddushim handwritten by the Sfas Emes * An exceedingly rare and holy leaf — chiddushim on Maseches Makkos from the sefer Sfas Emes on Shas, in the holy handwriting of the Admor Rabbi Yehuda Leib Alter of Ger, author of Sfas Emes. Nearly all the writings of the Sfas Emes on Shas were, after his passing, in the hands of his son-in-law, Rabbi Yaakov Meir Biderman of Warsaw, yet he managed to publish before the Holocaust writings on only Seder Kodshim, Zeraim, and Moed. With the Nazi destruction descending upon the great city of Warsaw, nearly all the manuscripts disappeared. Thus, an original leaf from the writings of the Sfas Emes on Shas is exceedingly rare and is nearly impossible to find. The present leaf was preserved in the archives of the Chassid Rabbi Yochanan Rubinstein, one of the first talmidim of Yeshivas Sfas Emes in Jerusalem, and after it was definitively identified as the holy handwriting of the Sfas Emes, it was printed for the first time, with the endorsement of the Pnei Menachem, in the sefer Likutei Sfas Emes (Bnei Brak, 1989). click to see more The Admor Rabbi Aryeh Leib Alter of Ger (1847 - 1905) was the grandson, disciple and successor of the Chiddushei Harim of Ger, patriarch of the Ger dynasty. He was appointed Rebbe at the young age of nineteen but refused to accept the leadership until the year 1870. Under his leadership, the Ger Chassidus flourished and expanded into the largest Chassidus in Poland. The Sfas Emes was looked upon as one of the greatest Rebbes of his time, titled ”King of Yisrael” by the great Chassidic leaders of his time. His unique style of learning and his interpretation of Chazal captured the hearts of many, with his sefarim becoming a cornerstone of Torah literature.
