Zhitomir Chumash. Shapira Press, 1864. Unrecorded Edition. * A Chumash “shul edition” with the commentary of Rashi and Onkelos, including the Five Megillos and the Haftaros. Printed at the press of the partners Rabbi Chanina Lipa and Rabbi Yehoshua Heshel Shapira, grandsons of the Rav of Slavita. It was produced in the same format as the shul Chumashim commonly found today, both in content and in format, containing the Chumash and the Megillos with only Targum Onkelos and Rashi. An extraordinarily rare printing. It is not recorded bibliographically and is apparently entirely unknown. It seems likely that it wore out through heavy use and therefore disappeared over the course of time. Over the years, the Shapira family printed the Chumash in Zhitomir with various commentators (Rashi together with the Baal HaTurim and Sifsei Chachamim, Ohr HaChaim, Be’er Mayim Chaim, Yiddish translation, and others) and in a range of sizes. This edition, in which only the Targum and Rashi were printed, in a large-format layout such as the present copy, is, to the best of Genazym's knowledge, the least commonly found of all.
