Kuntres of Chiddushim on Sugya in Shas, in the Handwriting of the Ksav Sofer Pressburg, 1862 * A complete kuntres of chiddushim on a foundational sugya in Shas, entirely in the holy handwriting of the Ksav Sofer, Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer, Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva of Pressburg. It addresses the fundamental sugya of “kol milsa da’amar Rachmana lo sa’avid” and the laws of monetary transactions on Shabbos. Among his writings, the Ksav Sofer discusses at length the teachings of his great father, the Chasam Sofer, whom he refers to with titles such as “Moshe Rabbeinu, ” “the Light of the Exile, ” and “the Teacher of Yisrael.” At the beginning of the kuntres is a title page in which the Ksav Sofer wrote: “[Kuntres] 23 on the laws of ‘kol milsa da’amar Rachmana lo sa’avid’ and the laws of buying and selling on Shabbos.” On the first leaf he recorded: “With the help of Heaven, that which my efforts have yielded — with the assistance of the One Who grants wisdom — in the halachic principle that when one performs a prohibited act it does not take effect.” Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Binyamin Sofer (1815–1873) was Av Beis Din of Pressburg and author of Ksav Sofer. ”He fully filled the place of our father, never straying in the slightest from his path or way…His radiance rested upon him constantly, and Ruach Hakodesh lived within him. The Hand of Hashem was recognized in all his deeds, for Moshe [the Chasam Sofer] placed his hands upon him, and all his character traits were drawn from the elevated traits of our father — his Torah, his righteousness, his modesty, and leadership” (his brother, Rabbi Shimon Sofer, Av Beis Din of Cracow, in his introduction to Shu”t Ksav Sofer). He succeeded his father, the venerable Chasam Sofer, as Av Beis Din and Rosh Yeshiva of Pressburg, at just 24 years of age. For the next 33 years, the Pressburg Yeshiva thrived, expanded and flourished under his leadership, cultivating generations of rabbanim who disseminated Torah throughout Hungary, to the extent that most of Hungary’s rabbanim in the following generation were his disciples. In the final days of the Chasam Sofer, as his illness worsened, the Chasam Sofer placed his hands upon the head of his son, the Ksav Sofer, and blessed him upon his appointment to the rabbinate of Pressburg. He said: “Your grandfather Rabbi Akiva is on your right, your grandfather Rabbi Shmuel Schotten Katz is on your left, and an angel is over your head, and also I shall follow you and fulfill your words.” The Ksav Sofer later expressed that at the time the Chasam Sofer’s hands were upon his head it felt like a blazing fire.
