“From your father, who stands with open arms to welcome you with love.” Letter from the Tiferes Yisrael, the Gaon Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz. Danzig, 1847 * A handwritten letter from the commentator of the Mishnah, the Tiferes Yisrael, addressed to his son, Rabbi Baruch Yitzchak Lifschitz, Av Beis Din of Landsberg. The entire letter expresses the deep affection of a father for his cherished son, conveying his joy in anticipation of his son’s visit, concluding with the loving words: “From your father, who stands with open arms to welcome you with love.” At the beginning of the letter, he inquires after the welfare of his grandson, Rabbi Gedalyah Lifschitz, named for his own father, the author of Regel Yesharah. Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz (1782–1860), Av Beis Din of Danzig, is famous for his monumental work Tiferes Yisrael, a commentary on the Mishnah which became a classic throughout the Jewish world and was reprinted in hundreds of editions, to this day. He was the son of Rabbi Gedalyah Lifschitz, author of Regel Yesharah, and grandson of Rabbi Yisrael Lifschitz, Av Beis Din of Kliva. His son, the recipient of this letter, describes his father’s sanctity and righteousness at length in the introduction to Tiferes Yisrael. The son receiving the letter, Rabbi Baruch Yitzchak Lifschitz, Av Beis Din of Landsberg (1812–1878) , was an extraordinary prodigy from his youth. He became known through his glosses ”אב”י” (Amar Baruch Yitzchak) printed in Tiferes Yisrael, as well as his work Misgeres Zahav, published there as well. Danzig, 1847. One leaf, size 14×17 cm.
