Karnei Re’em. Handwritten and Autographed Teshuvos by Rabbi Aharon Moshe Toibesh, Av Beis Din of Iași, Author of Karnei Re’em * Two handwritten and autographed teshuvos of the renowned gaon Rabbi Aharon Moshe Toibesh, one of the greatest rabbanim of Romania, author of Karnei Re’em on the Maharsha. The manuscript comprises eight pages and is signed three times. 1)Teshuva from 1825 sent to Rabbi Mordechai Zev Orenstein. This text contains comments on a teshuva that Rabbi Mordechai Zev printed in his father’s sefer Yeshuos Yaakov on Even HaEzer. At the beginning of the teshuva, Rabbi Aharon Moshe includes a short accompanying letter with his signature, expressing gratitude for the gift that his father sent him—the sefer Yeshuos Yaakov—which, in his words, 'illuminated the world.' The Karnei Re’em, a childhood friend of the Yeshuos Yaakov, extensively engaged with him in pilpul and Torah discussion. This teshuva was later printed in Shu”t To’afos Re’em (Zolkiew, 1855), Even HaEzer, siman 84. 2) Teshuva from 1845. printed in Shu”t To’afos Re’em (Zolkiew, 1855), Orach Chaim, siman 4. Rabbi Aharon Moshe Toibesh (1787–1852) , author of Shu”t To’afos Re’em and Karnei Re’em on the Maharsha, was born in Lvov, Galicia, and was one of the leading poskim of his era. He served as Rav of Sniatyn, Galicia, and from 1842 onward as Av Beis Din of Iași, Romania, a position he held until his passing in 1852. Regarded as one of the greatest Romanian rabbanim, he battled against assimilation and missionaries. Rabbi Aharon Moshe was also greatly venerated in Chassidic circles, and among those who turned to him with halachic questions were Rabbi Yehuda Tzvi of Razdil, Rabbi Chaim of Kossov, author of Toras Chaim, and Rabbi Yechezkel Shraga of Shinova, author of Divrei Yechezkel. His granddaughter, Rebbetzin Chaya, daughter of his son Rabbi Shmuel Shmelke Toibesh, author of Chayei Olam, married the Admor Rabbi Mottel of Nadvorna. Counted among their descendants are: Rabbi Meir of Kretshnif, Rabbi Yissachar Bertzi of Satmar, Rabbi Yisrael Yaakov of Chust, and others of the holy Nadvorna dynasty. The Rebbes of Chust relate that once, the granddaughter, wife of Rabbi Mordechai of Nadvorna, entered his room and, upon seeing someone seated with him, hurried out in alarm. He told her not to be afraid, for his grandfather, the Bach, had come to bring him a remedy (Chachmei Galicia, vol. III, p. 48). Sniatyn–Iași, 1825–1845.
