Letter from the Admor Rabbi Avraham’le of Kerestir. Son and successor of the holy Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir 1927 * * A letter bearing the sacred signature of the Admor Rabbi Avraham Steiner of Kerestir, son and successor of the holy Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir, concerning money collected for the charities of Eretz Yisrael, specifically the fund of Rabbi Meir Baal HaNes. The date of the letter is approximately two months before the Rebbe’s passing, between 15 Teves 1927 and 18 Adar 1927. Within the letter, the Rebbe requests that tzedakah boxes (“pushkes”) be sent, explaining, “for many ask, and I have nothing to give them.” The date of the letter is alluded to through the words “the year of Shefa Bracha, ” corresponding to the year 1927. The Admor Rabbi Avraham’le Steiner (1883–18 Adar I 1927) , the only son of the holy Rabbi Yeshaya’le of Kerestir, assumed his father’s position after his passing and continued in his path of charity and kindness. Many were helped through him and witnessed tangible salvations. He passed away in the prime of his life at the age of forty-four and was buried in his father’s Ohel in Kerestir. All who come to the Ohel in Kerestir, pour out their prayers beside his holy grave. The letter concludes with the blessing: “Standing in anticipation to the salvation of Hashem swiftly and to the imminent redemption.” The body of the letter was written by the legendary gabbai of the Kerestir court, Rabbi Elimelech Fishman, and is signed in the Rebbe’s own holy handwriting. Attached is an original postcard with blessing for the new year bearing the Rebbe’s portrait. ________________ Rabbi Elimelech Fishman, Hy”d (1881–1944) , author of Lechem Abirim, was a disciple of the Kedushas Yom Tov and a devoted confidant of his son, the Atzei Chaim. During the First World War he fled to Irshava, where he was appointed gabbai to Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, with whom he learned regularly. When the position of gabbai in the court of Rabbi Yeshaya’le became vacant, the Satmar Rebbe advised him to settle in Kerestir and accept the role, so that his income would increase and he could support his large family. When he entered the inner chamber with a kvittel, Rabbi Yeshaya’le read the note, dozed briefly as was his custom, and after a few moments said, “Ir vet bleiben bei mir! You shall stay with me!” Rabbi Elimelech was thus appointed gabbai and also served as chazzan on the Yamim Noraim (see Mofes HaDor, p. 96, note 1). ----------------------------- Any inquiries about this lot?
