Letter Handwritten by the Ramchal Containing Profound Explanations in Kabbalah. Mantua, 1731 * Long Letter in the Handwriting of the Kabbalist Rabbeinu Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Ramchal. Containing Profound Explanations in Kabbalah and the Teachings of the Arizal. Mantua, 11 Iyar 1731 A long and important handwritten and autographed letter, by the great and holy kabbalist Rabbeinu Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Ramchal. The Ramchal concludes the letter with a heartfelt blessing: “And Hashem, the G-d of the heavens, should fulfill the desires of your hearts for good, for many years, amein ken yehi ratzon.” It was sent to his rebbi, Rabbi Yeshayahu Bassan. The majority of the letter’s content consists of deep chiddushim in matters of Kabbalah — an explanation to the holy Arizal’s teachings, in response to a question posed by Rabbi Aviad Sar Shalom Bazila, author of Emunas Chachamim. At the beginning of the letter, the Ramchal mentions his handwritten commentary on the Idra Rabbah — his remarkable work Adir Bamarom. The letter reveals his caution in refraining from the public dissemination of his kabbalistic writings. In his youth, his contemporaries had not yet grasped the full measure of his genius, and he therefore chose to communicate these matters only in confidence. Thus, he discreetly informs his teacher of his commentary on the Zohar, and notes that he would entrust a copy of this work to his father-in-law, Rabbi David Finzi. At the time he wrote this letter, the Ramchal was only twenty-four years old (!), yet his immense mastery of the deepest matters of Kabbalah is already evident. As one of the greatest kabbalists of all times, the Ramchal grasped all hidden aspects of Torah on such a profound level that he was described as the following: “He speaks of lofty, exalted matters as if he were standing beside the worlds at the hour that they were created.” In his writings, the Ramchal exhibited that the wisdom of Kabbalah is not dissimilar to other wisdoms, and that it too must have its own rules, schedule of study, limits and foundations. The Ramchal opened a vast window into the Torah of the Arizal, authoring an extensive commentary on Kisvei Ha’Ari. The Vilna Gaon once commented, “The writings of the Arizal are a parable, and the writings of the Ramchal are their interpretation.” Mantua, 1731. One leaf written on both sides — two full pages, forty-two lines in the Ramchal's own holy handwriting and bearing his signature. Size: 14×20 cm. Condition: Excellent, preserved in an elegant leather binding and crafted case.  The letter was published in Iggros u’Teshuvos Ramchal u’Bnei Doro, Shriki edition (Jerusalem, 2009), Iggeres 84. ******** Rabbeinu Moshe Chaim Luzzatto The Ramchal Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (1707-1747) , author of the landmark sefer Mesilas Yesharim and many other acclaimed sefarim, was born in Padua, Italy, where he studied in the Padua Yeshivah under the guidance of Rabbi Yeshayahu Bassan, a leading posek in Italy at that time, author of Shu”t Lachmei Torah and son-in-law of the Rabach (a disciple of the Ramaz, one of the leading Italian kabbalists). Before long, he became fluent in all realms of Torah, including the Oral Torah of the Arizal, which he knew by heart by the age of fourteen. At an exceedingly young age, he joined a chaburah of kabbalists known as Mevakshei Hashem where he grew in Torah and piety until a Maggid was sent from the Heavens to teach him profound secrets in Kabbalah. His contemporaries exalted him with praises such as, “He conducted himself with holiness and piety, purity and abstention; and his appearance was as a heavenly angel, truly awe-inspiring, and his holiness is miraculous” (Kerem Chemed Vol. 2, p. 67). In 1743, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of moving to Eretz Yisrael. However, only four years later, on 26 Iyar, 1747, he passed away at the age of forty in Acco and was laid to rest near the tomb of the Tanna Rabbi Akiva in Teveria.
