The Classic Mussar Sefer. Mesillas Yesharim by the Ramchal. Amsterdam, 1740. First Edition. * The Path of the Just – Code of Jewish Ethics, with a comprehensive elucidation of “the duty of a person in his world, ” by Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Ramchal. A rare first edition, published by the Ramchal himself during his stay in Amsterdam. From its first appearance, Mesillas Yesharim captured the hearts of Klal Yisrael and laid out clear “paths” for Avodas Hashem and the perfecting of one's character traits. It has been studied with great passion and devotion in all batei midrash and yeshivos, among chassidim and Litvish alike, and is found in almost every Jewish home. From this first printing until the year 1940, close to one hundred editions were published, and since then, countless commentaries and explanations have been written around it. This first edition is exceedingly rare and highly sought after. The ba'alei mussar agreed that no other work rivals it in its comprehensive, detailed presentation of the entire “duty of a person in his world.” Its language is flowing and clear, drawing the reader into a refined and elevated world built upon pure and untainted middos. With his immense greatness and extraordinary genius, the Ramchal succeeded in clothing profound ideas and concealing hidden depths within simple words, comprehensible to every student. It is accepted among ba'alei machshava and those well versed in the Ramchal’s teachings that although the sefer appears to have been written in the revealed approach to Torah, it is entirely founded upon the inner dimension of the Torah, and is a concise distillation of the Ramchal’s Kabbalah as found in his works Daas Tevunos, Derech Hashem, and Klach Pischei Chochmah. Rabbi Yerucham HaLevi of Mir writes: “One who is discerning in the works of the Ramchal will see that the sefer Mesillas Yesharim encompasses all the sefarim he authored, and it is possible that entire sefarim and compositions of his are contained within a few short lines of Mesillas Yesharim” (Chochmah U’Mussar, vol.
