Sefer Yesod of Ashkenazic Minhagim. Sefer Maharil. Sabionetta, 1556. First Edition. * Halachic rulings, laws, and customs for the entire year by Rabbi Yaakov Segal Moelin, the Maharil, together with the customs of his teacher, Rabbi Shalom of Neustadt. The Maharil (d. 1427) is regarded as the “father of Ashkenazic minhagim, ” and his sefer is one of the sifrei yesod of Jewish halacha. The Maharil is the most influential source for the rulings of the Rema in Shulchan Aruch, and all of Klal Yisrael from the lands of Poland and Germany follow his words. The Maharil studied Torah from the great sages of Ashkenaz, Rabbi Shalom of Neustadt and Rabbi Avraham Kloizner, and all the sages of Ashkenaz who came after him were his disciples and drew from his Torah. Gedolei Yisrael throughout all the generations warned strongly about safeguarding the mesorah of minhagim. In this context, they frequently cited the words of the Maharil brought in this sefer in the laws of Yom Kippur (leaf 61b), that one must not change the custom of the tefillos, not even the customary melodies. These words of the Maharil were firmly established by the Rema in Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim, siman 619): that a person should not deviate from the custom of the city, even regarding the melodies or the piyutim recited there.
