FIRST TWO TRACTATES OF GEMARA PRINTED AFTER THE HOLOCAUST!! - In 1946, in the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust, the first post-war editions of the Talmud were printed in Munich, Germany, specifically for Jewish survivors living in displaced persons (DP) camps. This initial project consisted of two tractates, Kiddushin (Marriage) and Nedarim (Vows), which were chosen because they were the only two volumes survivors could find in usable condition at a local monastery in St. Ottilien. The printing was a deeply symbolic act of spiritual resistance: it was organized by Rabbis Samuel Abba Snieg and Samuel Jacob Rose, both survivors of Dachau, and produced using the same German printing presses that had previously churned out Nazi propaganda. The title pages of these volumes featured a poignant illustration of a concentration camp surrounded by barbed wire, paired with the phrase ”From labor to freedom, from darkness to a great light.” These two tractates served as the ”pilot program” that eventually convinced the U.S. Army to sponsor the publication of the full 19-volume ”Survivors' Talmud” between 1948 and 1950, marking the first and only time a government body has officially published the Talmud.
