With the Italian national team he became world champion in 2006 and runner-up in Europe in 2000. Considered one of the best Italian players of all time as well as one of the strongest in the world of his generation, during his competitive career he always played for Roma, a team of which he was captain from 1998[8] to 2017, for a record total of 19 seasons, [9] winning one Scudetto (2000-2001, the third in the Giallorossi's history), two Italian Super Cups (2001 and 2007) and two Italian Cups (2006-2007 and 2007-2008).
