Large Paestan red-figure oinochoe by the Boston Orestes Painter. - Large Paestan red-figure oinochoe by the Boston Orestes Painter. 340 - 330 BC. H 36.2cm, ø 22.2cm. On the front of the treefoil jug of form 2 is a framed image above a wavy band. It depicts a panther biga being mounted by the youthful Dionysus. The god holds kantharos, phiale, and thyrsus, and wears fur headband, boots, and a cloak draped over his arms. Bracelets on his wrists and pearl necklaces around his chest and left thigh serve as ornamentation. He is accompanied by a small Pan with a thyrsus and small vessels. Red, yellow, and white are used for the details. On the shoulder is a typical workshop ornament in the form of an ivy tendril with corymbs. Masterpiece of Paestan vase painting!
