Lucanian red-figure bell krater by the Creusa Painter. - Lucanian red-figure bell krater by the Creusa Painter. 390 - 370 BC. H 30.4cm, ø 31.2cm. Extremely interesting juxtaposition of a heroic group with a realistically depicted scene. On one side, two youths in heroic nudity, holding spears and shield, are clad in petasos and shoulder cloaks. Beside them, a young woman with the expressive face typical of this painter holds pitcher and phiale ready for an offering. These may represent the Dioscuri Castor and Polydeuces together with their sister Helen. On the other side, a repeat of a group of three, but this time the young woman stands holding a phiale between two draped youths in front of a pillar or altar. Worn at few places, otherwise intact. Acquired between 1802 and 1810 by Amédée Julien in Naples; then owned by a Geneva family since 1811. cf. A.D. Trendall, The Red-Figured Vases of Lucania, Campania and Sicily. 3. Supplement (1983).
