Boeotian clay idol of a goddess. - Boeotian clay idol of a goddess. Last third 6th century B.C. Terracotta, H 24.6 cm. Standing goddess with a flat body, stubby arms, and a high polos on her head. The red, black, and yellow paint applied to a white slip reveals not only her facial features but also the magnificent design of her robe. Across her chest lies a horizontal stripe with diagonal red lines. Below this a wide stripe decorated with red and yellow diamonds, framed on both sides by red stripes. The cape is decorated with a vertical tongue pattern. The goddess also wears large disc earrings and a necklace. Professionally restored crack at the neck, surface partially missing but otherwise well preserved paint.
