Their design was minimal and they did not bear the portrait of Queen Wilhelmina, in accordance with the Nazi policy of removing symbols of Dutch sovereignty. The Dutch public disliked the new coins both for their poor quality and for their clear identification with the occupation. After the liberation, traditional coins gradually returned, and zinc coins disappeared from circulation but remained collectors' items of historical value
