Impressive lot of several hundred Palestine revenue stamps 1920 from the EEF series - face value of 13 Mills - high catalog value! Includes stamps with errors, good conditions
This postage stamp was issued during the British rule in Israel, immediately after the conquest of the country from the Ottoman Empire during World War I. It is a stamp from the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (E.E.F.) postage stamp series, which were used by the British in the areas they controlled in the Middle East. The stamp carries a face value of 13 Mills and was printed in blue. In its center appears the inscription "POSTAGE PAID" in English and Arabic, and is surrounded by a frame that includes the face value in three languages - English, Arabic and Hebrew.
The most striking feature of this stamp is the black overprint that was added to it in Israel, in which the name "PALESTINE" appears in three languages - English, Arabic and Hebrew. The purpose of this addition was to clarify the stamp's designation for use in Palestine (Eretz Israel) under British Mandate rule, and to distinguish it from similar stamps issued for use elsewhere in the region.
