An interesting registered mail envelope sent on January 28, 1949 from Discount Bank, Tel Aviv to the Israeli Government's Ministry of Aliyah, with 2 stamps from the ”Doar Ivri” series with a face value of 20 mils, Tel Aviv seals and symbolic illustrations related to aliyah and the detention camps in Cyprus - An interesting registered mail envelope sent on January 28, 1949 from Discount Bank, Tel Aviv to the Israeli Government's Ministry of Aliyah, with 2 stamps from the ”Doar Ivri” series with a face value of 20 mils, Tel Aviv seals and symbolic illustrations related to aliyah and the detention camps in Cyprus On the front side of the envelope appear two stamps with a face value of 20 mils from the ”Doar Ivri” series, the first stamps issued in the State of Israel, and on which is imprinted a round Tel Aviv postmark with the date 28.1.1949. In addition, there is an official blue registration label with the serial number ”TEL AVIV 6 No 5577”, indicating that the envelope was sent by registered mail. The envelope has printed instructions in English ”REGISTERED”, as well as a request to return it to the sender in case it is not delivered within five days. The envelope also features an impressive and symbolic illustration of an illegal immigrant ship at sea with the inscription ”Cyprus”, alluding to the immigrants who were imprisoned in British detention camps on the island in the years before and immediately after the establishment of the state. The handwritten Hebrew address on the envelope is addressed to ”Government of Israel, Ministry of Immigration, 138 Allenby St., Tel Aviv”. On the back of the envelope is a clear stamp of the sender, ”The Palestine Discount Bank Ltd, Tel-Aviv”, indicating that the envelope was sent from the Discount Bank, a major financial institution during the early days of the state. Here too, there is an additional postmark from Tel Aviv with a clear date, January 28, 1949, matching the one on the front of the envelope.
