Reverse: A relief of the ”Egoz” ship tossing between fierce waves, with the inscription in 2 languages - Hebrew and French - to commemorate the year and the event: ”Egoz Ship 1961 - Le Navire Egoz - In Memory of the Immigration Ships”. The medal was issued on the anniversary of the reburial of the remains of some of the shipwrecked people, who were brought for burial on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem in December 1992, an event that marked the end of an exciting and sacrificial chapter in the history of North African Jewish immigration to Israel. The ”Egoz” affair is a supreme symbol of the strong desire of Moroccan Jews to immigrate to the Land of Israel even under severe restrictions, when on January 9, 1961, the ship sank off the coast of Morocco and 44 of its passengers perished.
