This coin was minted at the historic Carson City mint, which operated in the silver mining region of Nevada during the “Wild West” period, and is considered one of the iconic symbols of the American Silver Age at the end of the 19th century. In 1889, only 350,000 coins were minted in Carson City, an extremely low quantity compared to other years. A large part of the coins were later melted down (including under the Pittman Act), and therefore the survival rate is very low. Unlike other years of the CC series that were found in large quantities in the GSA hoard, this coin is almost never found in hoards, which makes it especially rare in all grades of preservation. This coin is considered one of the key coins of the entire series Morgan, and is sometimes referred to by collectors as the “King of the Carson City Morgans.” 1889-CC coins are highly sought after in any condition, and even examples with significant wear can sell for thousands of dollars. In high condition and graded coins, prices can reach tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars at international auctions.
