The goblet-shaped body is characteristic of Middle Eastern percussion instruments. A comparable example is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and is catalogued as a late 19th-century painted ceramic darabukka from Iran/Arabia. The present example has undergone an old restoration, visible upon close inspection and reflected in the photographs, and is offered in its current condition.
