A Rare Carved Ivory Zodiac Netsuke, Meiji Period 19th Century in the Style of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892)
Animals are a popular theme among netsuke artist and especially the animals of the zodiac. Each year is represented by a different animal. The zodiac begins with the year of the rat and continues with ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, goat, monkey, cock, dog and boar. According to the legend, budha invited all the animals to dine with him and these twelve animals accepted the invitation and came.
