Simon Jacobsz de Vlieger (1600-1653), A Traveler in a Wooded Path - Black, grey chalk and brown wash on paper 21.8 X 20 cm Provenance: Carl Benjamin Brüsaber, Hamburg ( L.311 ); Rudolf Philip Goldschmidt ( L.2926 ), sale of his collection, Frankfurt-am-Main, Prestel, 4-5 October 1917, lot 522 (as Herman Saftleven); Anonymous sale, Frankfurt-am-Main, Prestel, 1927 (as Herman Saftleven; according to further catalogue entry stuck to back of mount); Estate of Isidor Kaiser, Copenhagen-Hamburg. L.4240 Notes: Presented for sale at Sotheby's (July 6th 2005) with the following notes: ” The distinctive figure types and the soft handling, particularly in the foliage, make the traditional attribution to Herman Saftleven unsustainable. In fact, this drawing is stylistically closely comparable with a signed landscape by De Vlieger, sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 2 November 2004, lot 75.” Bears a watermark.
