He was the second son of a long-established plate-style pastry shop in Katsuda, Katsuo-cho, Katsuda-gun, Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from Katsumata Agricultural and Forestry School in 1919, he studied at the French School in Kobe, where he learned Western painting from Nari Koide and Katsuyuki Nabei, and was selected for the second art exhibition for the first time in 1929.
