A Victorian Two-Tone Stoneware Flagon by Powell of Bristol - A large Victorian utilitarian stoneware flagon of bulbous form, featuring a narrow collared neck and two applied strap handles at the shoulders. The vessel displays a traditional two-tone finish, with the upper section finished in a glossy brown salt glaze, known as a Bristol glaze, over a buff-coloured stoneware body. The shoulder is clearly impressed with the maker's mark, featuring the name POWELL in an upward arch above the word BRISTOL in a straight line. This mark identifies the piece as a product of the Powell pottery in Bristol, which is credited with the development of this specific durable and acid-resistant glaze technique. The body exhibits characteristic manufacturing features including minor pitting, kiln-stilt marks, and peppering within the glaze. The item currently bears a modern auction lot sticker and a handwritten dealer label.
