AN ALFRED-EMILIEN O'HARA COMTE DE NIEUWERKERKE EQUESTRIAN BRONZE

A bronze equestrian figure depicting mounted William I, Prince of Orange by Alfred-Emilien O'Hara, Comte De Nieuwerkerke (1811-1892). The Prince is depicted wearing armor, his horse with his right leg raised, on an oval naturalistic base, signed Cte E de Nieuwerkerke 1843, dark brown patination. Signed on the base along with the foundry mark. Inspired by Baron Carlo Marochetti's equestrian monument to Emmanuel Philibert, King William II of the Netherlands commissioned Nieuwerkerke to produce a monument in honor of his namesake William I Prince of Orange on horseback. Nieuwerkerke presented a maquette of his design to William I through their mutual friend Baron Fagel, William's ambassador to France. He produced a plaster version which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1843 and was then commissioned to produce the monumental bronze version which was unveiled in 1845 outside the Royal Palace, The Hague where it remains today. Nieuwerkerke was subsequently appointed as the Superintendent of the Academy and the Director of the Louvre under Napoleon III.

Dimensions: H: 22 3/4 in., (58 cm.)

Condition: Excellent overall, very nice bronze patina.
