A RARE ISLAMIC DHAL SHIELD, INDIA 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Circular, convex, iron hand-forged shield. At the center is a brass mount depicting the moon, four brass studs, and other brass mounts depicting tigers and other animals. The inside of the shield is in excellent condition, covered with leather which is decorated with magnificent floral décor. In the center are four iron rings for fixing the hilt. Possibly Rajasthan. Circa 1800. The dhal is a type of shield found in the Indian subcontinent. They are nearly always geometrically round and yet they vary in diameter from about eight inches to twenty-four inches. Some are nearly flat while others are strongly convex or curved. The edges may be flat or rolled back in the reverse direction to that of the curvature of the shield. Dhal shields were either made from metal or hide.
